Parachute Test Vehicle (PTV) This unmanned sled was the first liquid-fueled, rocket-powered vehicle to be run on a high-speed test track. The rocket, burning liquid oxygen and alcohol, propelled the vehicle to nearly one and two-tenths times the speed of sound (mach 1.2) in four and one-half seconds. The PTV was used primarily for parachute testing, but was also run to test the track's instrumentation and selected cameras' for reliability.
