The opjective of this test, which took place at Holloman Air Force base, was to measure human response to sudden deceleration. As the sled hit the water brake, Dr. Stapp sustained 43 Gs and experienced the same effects as a pilot ejecting from an aircraft traveling 1,000 mph at 35,000 ft.
